IB PYP: Primary Years
Ages 6 - 11

Primary Years Programme

Students in Grades 1–5 build strong academic foundations through the IB Primary Years Programme. With two adults in every classroom, a Mandarin-English Bilingual pathway, and weekly XCLerate Future Skills sessions, every child is known, supported, and challenged from day one.

Unique Features of our IB Primary Years Programme

XWA’s PYP builds strong foundations in literacy, mathematics, and critical thinking through a teaching approach shaped by years of curriculum research and investment in classroom practice. Literacy aligns with AERO benchmarks, widely used across leading international schools, while Science follows NGSS, the same standards used in top US school districts, providing clear external benchmarks. With two adults in every classroom, each child receives the support or challenge they need.

Building Strong Foundations for Future Success

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) at XWA lays the groundwork for academic success and personal growth by nurturing curious, capable, and confident learners. It goes beyond traditional education to develop the skills, mindset, and values students need to thrive in a complex, global world.

Develops independent thinkers: Encourages students to ask questions, explore ideas, and take ownership of their learning.

Connects learning to the real world: Helps students understand how knowledge applies beyond the classroom through meaningful, real-life contexts.

Strengthens critical thinking and problem-solving: Builds the ability to analyse, reflect, and approach challenges with confidence.

Promotes global awareness and responsibility: Cultivates open-minded, empathetic learners who understand diverse perspectives.

Supports holistic development: Focuses on academic, social, emotional, and ethical growth as equally important.

Prepares students for future success: Equips learners with transferable skills needed for higher education and a rapidly evolving world.

An Inquiry-Driven Education for Future-Ready Learners

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) at XCL World Academy is a comprehensive, inquiry-driven curriculum designed to nurture curiosity, independence, and a love for learning. Rooted in the IB philosophy, the programme builds on early years foundations while preparing students for more complex and self-directed learning experiences.

Learning is structured through transdisciplinary Units of Inquiry, where subjects such as literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies are seamlessly integrated. This approach allows students to explore real-world concepts in depth, make meaningful connections across disciplines, and apply their understanding in new and diverse contexts.

The programme is further enhanced by the XCLerate framework, which embeds future-ready skills such as creativity, technology, entrepreneurship, and leadership into everyday learning. Students engage in hands-on, project-based experiences that encourage innovation, collaboration, and problem-solving.

A strong emphasis is also placed on bilingual development through a two-way immersion model in English and Chinese, supporting both academic achievement and cultural fluency. Alongside this, students benefit from a balanced focus on literacy, numeracy, and digital competencies.

Through a combination of academic rigor, real-world application, and holistic development, the PYP empowers students to become confident, capable, and globally minded learners.

Purpose-Built Campus for Young Learners

Designed specifically for children from early years through primary, our dedicated campus creates an environment where young learners feel safe, confident, and ready to explore. Age-appropriate spaces, flexible classrooms, and specialist facilities, from science labs and art studios to libraries, music rooms, and outdoor learning zones, are thoughtfully designed around how children learn and grow.

Separate from older students, this purpose-built setting supports a calmer daily rhythm, stronger emotional security, and greater independence. With natural light, quiet breakout areas, and safe outdoor spaces, students can learn, play, and collaborate in ways that build confidence, wellbeing, and a lifelong love of learning.

XCLerate Future Skills Programme

From Grade 1, every XWA student takes part in weekly XCLerate sessions covering AI literacy, leadership, community service, creative arts, entrepreneurship, and environmental stewardship. These aren't add-ons, XCLerate skills are integrated into regular classroom learning, so students practise them in context throughout the school year.

Chinese-English Bilingual Programme

One of Singapore’s leading bilingual programmes, offering immersive, curriculum-integrated learning in English and Chinese with two native-speaking teachers in one classroom. From Pre-K through Grade 5, and with dual homeroom teachers in Grades 1–5, subjects like Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Literacy are taught in both languages, so language development happens through academic learning, not alongside it.

Designed and led by Angela Gao, Head of Bilingual, who developed XWA’s custom Chinese curriculum and is undertaking doctoral research in international Chinese language education.

FAQs

Get answers to the most common questions from prospective parents about our school.

What is the IB Primary Years Programme?

The IB PYP is a curriculum framework used in primary and elementary schools worldwide. Students learn through inquiry-based units that connect subjects around central questions, developing both knowledge and skills for how to learn. The same framework continues into the Middle Years Programme, so your child does not have to adjust to a completely new approach in secondary school.

What is XCLerate?

XCLerate is XWA's future skills programme, launched in August 2025. From Grade 1, students participate in weekly 45-minute sessions covering AI literacy, leadership, community service, creative arts, entrepreneurship, and environmental stewardship. These skills are integrated into regular classroom learning, not added as extras.

What are the fees for Primary Years?

For the most up-to-date tuition fees and associated costs, please refer to our School Fees page. This includes annual tuition by grade level, as well as applicable one-time and recurring fees.

What are the three learning pathways?

Mainstream offers full English instruction with world language options. Bilingual provides two-way immersion in English and Chinese with two native-speaking teachers. Intensive English supports students new to English with daily EAL classes while they participate in classroom life. Each pathway leads to the same IB PYP outcomes.

How does the bilingual pathway work?

Students have two homeroom teachers, one English-speaking and one Chinese-speaking, both native speakers. Academic content is taught in both languages through a two-way immersion model, so children learn maths, science, and social studies in Chinese alongside their English instruction. The pathway is currently expanding each year.

What is a Unit of Inquiry?

A Unit of Inquiry is a multi-week investigation built around a central question that connects different subjects. A class studying "How the World Works" might measure weather patterns in maths, read about climate in literacy, and design an experiment in science, all as part of the same inquiry. Units run across all year groups and are planned collaboratively by the teaching team. By Grade 5, students lead their own extended inquiry in the PYP Exhibition.
