Starting Fresh in Singapore: How this Expat Family From Slovakia Found the Right School for Their Twins

Relocating to a new country is an exciting adventure, but it also comes with big decisions, especially when you’re moving with teenagers. When Lena Kiradziev arrived in Singapore from Slovakia with her twin daughters, finding a school that would support their adjustment while keeping them academically challenged became a top priority.

Nearly a year after joining XCL World Academy, Lena says the school has played a crucial role in helping both her daughters, and the whole family, settle into their new life.

Finding the Right Fit in a New Country

Michaela and Natasa, both in Grade 10, were entering an entirely new environment. The Kiradzievs wanted a school that combined strong academics with an international community.

“We were starting a completely new chapter,” Lena explains. “It was important to find a school where the girls could feel comfortable while continuing to grow academically.”

The family also hoped their daughters would gain a global outlook by studying alongside students from diverse backgrounds.

After researching several schools, they visited XCL World Academy. The modern facilities immediately caught their attention, from spaces designed for academics and arts to sports and collaborative learning.

“It wasn’t just the facilities that impressed us,” Lena recalls. “When we spoke to the teachers and other parents, we could see how much they genuinely care about each student’s development.”

The welcoming environment left a strong impression on a family who was just starting life in Singapore.

Learning that goes beyond the classroom

Michaela and Natasa quickly noticed that learning at XWA encourages curiosity and exploration.

“The classes are very interactive,” Natasa says. “We’re encouraged to ask questions and share ideas, which makes learning much more interesting.”

Following the International Baccalaureate curriculum, the school emphasizes enquiry-based learning, critical thinking, and real-world understanding.

“I like that we explore topics in depth instead of just memorising information,” Michaela adds. “It helps you really understand what you’re learning.”

Supportive teachers have also helped the twins adapt quickly to their new school environment.

“The teachers are always approachable,” Lena notes. “If students need help, they are happy to spend time guiding them.”

Beyond lessons, Michaela and Natasa have enjoyed exploring a wide range of extracurricular opportunities, from languages to arts and other activities. These experiences have helped them build confidence and discover new passions.

“The school encourages you to try new things,” Michaela says. “There are so many opportunities to explore what you enjoy.”

The social environment has been equally important. Thanks to the international community, the twins made friends quickly, which helped them feel at home much faster.

A community that you can call your own

Parents new to Singapore often face challenges creating a social network. XWA offers regular workshops and activities that bring families together while providing practical support for life in Singapore.

Lena herself became part of the community in a unique way.

“When I mentioned that I would love to organise a Zumba class for parents, the school encouraged the idea,” she says. What started as a simple initiative has grown into weekly sessions that bring together parents from many nationalities.

“It’s become a fun way for everyone to stay active and connect,” she adds.

Growing in Confidence

Reflecting on their first year, Lena has seen her daughters grow academically and personally.

“What I value most is how the school encourages students to be confident and express themselves,” she says.

The diverse environment has helped Michaela and Natasa adapt quickly.

“It didn’t take long to feel comfortable here,” Natasa adds. “Everyone is very welcoming.”

Choosing the right school has been pivotal for the family.

“XWA has helped my daughters grow into confident young adults,” Lena says. “And it has given our family a supportive community as we build our life here.”

Families starting their own relocation journey can experience the difference firsthand.
