Application Criteria

Grade Placement

Every school system names grades differently. Year 3 in the UK, Grade 2 in the US, and Standard 1 in South Africa refer to different ages. The table below shows which XWA grade matches your child's date of birth.

As an international school in Singapore, XWA considers age, academic readiness, and social and emotional development when placing students, all within the school's placement guidelines. The cutoff date is 1 September: your child's age on that date determines their grade for admission consideration.

Some applicants may be asked to complete a short assessment. This helps XWA confirm the right grade placement based on your child's current academic level.

English as an Additional Language (EAL) Support

English proficiency requirements vary depending on which grade your child is applying to.

For Grades 1 to 9, XWA assesses English proficiency as part of the admissions process. If the assessment shows your child needs language support, enrolment in the EAL programme is required.

The programme helps students with limited English develop written and spoken skills so they can participate fully in lessons and get the most from their time at XWA.EAL is not included in tuition. The programme costs S$7,760 per year and is charged separately.

*EAL Programme is not included in the tuition fees for students in Grades 1 to 9 and will be charged separately.

Immunisations

All applicants must submit vaccination records through the online application form as part of the admissions process. Immunisation is a prerequisite for applying and enrolling at XWA.

Foreign-born Children Aged 12 and Below

If your child is foreign-born and aged 12 or under, you must also provide proof of vaccination or immunity for diphtheria and measles to the Health Promotion Board (HPB). HPB verifies this before you can apply to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) or Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) for long-term stay in Singapore. This applies to first-time applicants only.

Immunisation against measles and diphtheria is mandatory in Singapore under the Fourth Schedule of the Infectious Diseases Act (Cap 137). For more information, visit the HPB National Immunisation Registry at https://www.nir.hpb.gov.sg/fcine/#/

Disclosure Of Nationality

This section applies if your child holds dual nationality or Singapore citizenship.

You must disclose the full nationality and citizenship status of your child when applying, including any dual nationality.

If your child holds Singapore citizenship (by birth or registration), you must declare this at the time of application. MOE approval is required before the course can begin. After enrolment, notify the Registrar Department immediately if your family's nationality or residency status changes.

Learning Support

If your child has learning differences or may need additional support, XWA can help. The school provides learning support across all grades in an inclusive classroom setting, with students learning alongside their peers.

If your child has learning differences or may need additional help, contact the Admissions team at admissions@xwa.edu.sg before applying. This conversation helps both you and XWA understand whether the school can provide what your child needs. XWA will consider an application when the school is confident it can provide the right level of support.

Learning Support costs S$4,206 per year and is charged separately from tuition.

MOE Exemption

This section applies if your child is a Singapore citizen (by birth or registration) and you want them to attend XWA instead of a Ministry of Education school.

Singapore citizens need approval from the Ministry of Education before enrolling in an international school. XWA provides personalised help with the exemption application and works directly with MOE on your behalf. If your child needs an MOE exemption, contact the Admissions team ahead of your intended start date. They will guide you through each step.

What to expect
XWA liaises directly with MOE throughout the application and keeps you updated once a decision is reached. MOE typically takes about eight weeks to review applications and will inform XWA of the decision. Complex medical cases can also take up to eight weeks.Including all required documents with your application helps avoid delays. Incomplete applications take longer to process. Once XWA receives everything, the Admissions Committee reviews the application and advises you on your child's eligibility.

If approved, the School Registrar will contact you with a formal offer letter and instructions for completing enrolment.

Student Pass

No Student Pass required if your child holds a Dependant's Pass, Immigration Exemption Order (IEO), or Singapore Permanent Residency (PR).

Student Pass required for all other international students.

If a Student Pass is needed, XWA will process the registration after you confirm enrolment. Contact the Admissions team ahead of your intended start date, and they will guide you through the application.

How the application works
The School Registrar will contact you after enrolment is confirmed and explain the next steps. You submit the Student Pass application through the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) online portal called SOLAR+.XWA reserves the student's place while ICA processes the application. The student can start school only after the Student Pass is approved and you have submitted a copy of the card (front and back) to the School Registrar before the course starts.

Guardianship

This section applies if your child will not be living with at least one parent while attending XWA.

XWA requires students to live with at least one parent while attending school in Singapore. Exceptions are considered on a case-by-case basis for Secondary Years students only (Grade 6 and above) and must be approved by the Education Leadership Team before admission.

If an exception is approved, you can appoint a guardian through a professional guardianship agency, or choose a family member, relative, or family friend. The guardian acts on your behalf and is responsible for all aspects of the student's welfare while in Singapore.

Guardianship Requirements
You and your appointed guardian (and any agents involved) must sign a formal written agreement. This agreement must state that you have granted guardianship for an agreed period of time and that the guardian will follow all aspects of the XWA Guardianship Policy.

Guardianship Policy
The Guardianship Agreement must be signed by the parent, guardian, and any agent involved. If your child will be living with a guardian, read the guardianship conditions recommended by XWA carefully, then contact the Admissions team ahead of your intended start date. They will guide you through the process.
